After Warner Brothers, Universal, and Fox, have knocked their Netflix release dates back to at least four weeks, Disney has announced that it too is considering imposing a streaming content delay. Fan-freaking-tastic.
Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, mentioned the strategy on a conference call with investors Tuesday despite “not seeing any effect from these dollar-rentals on their sell-through business” when other studios imposed their own gaps. He also parroted the industry’s standard reasoning for the action—declining DVD and Blu-Ray sales. “So they’ve decided to take a step in the direction of further protecting the initial window of the sell-through,” Iger said.
The decision hasn’t been finalized yet and Iger made no indication of when one would be made. If Disney does push for the delay, expect it to ask the same of Redbox and other rental services as well. [LA Times via Electronista]
