The music industry loves to point its finger at piracy and blame this practice for declining sales, unemployment and lost wages. But for Miramax CEO Mike Lang, piracy isn’t worrisome; monopolistic companies like Apple are.
When speaking at the MIPCOM conference, Lang described how a major player like Apple can influence packaging, merchandising and other aspects of media distribution. Lang believes this control can adversely affect content providers who have to jump through hoops if they want their media to appear in an online store like iTunes.
Piracy is not as threatening because it can be reduced with innovative business strategies. Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos seems to understand this idea. His company’s philosophy is to listen to consumers and give them what they want. If you don’t, he says, “they will figure out a way to get it.” [Boing Boing]
